Loudoun County History

Loudoun County, Virginia is rich in History

Loudoun County is fast approaching its 250th aniversary in 2007.

Loudoun County began as part of a five million acre Northern Neck of Virginia Proprietary granted by King  Charles II of England to seven noblemen in 1649.  This enormous tract gave way to form:

  • Westmoreland
  • Stafford
  • Prince William
  • Fairfax County
Loudoun County in turn, was carved right out of western Fairfax County in the year 1757, by an act taken by the Virginia House Of Burgesses.  Leesburg was named in honor of the Lee family of Virginia, and has served continuously as the County Seat since 1757.

Today Loudoun County is considered to be one of the fastest growing counties in the United States!
